Sunny San Diego

This weekend Sean and I are in sunny San Diego.  We both love it down here, I spent a lot of vacations growing up in San Diego visiting my grandparents, and I actually lived here for a couple years after I finished college.  Sean has spent some time traveling to San Diego for work and loves the area too, so we have actively been hunting for jobs and houses to try to move after the wedding.

We came down this weekend because I had a job interview lined up with a local consumer electronics / social networking company, but just as we landed at the airport they called me to let me know the job opening has been canceled.  There are definitely worse places in the world to have your business plans canceled, so although we were disappointed we decided it was a blessing in disguise and have enjoyed taking a weekend off wedding planning and instead have been cruising around the city and just relaxing.

On Friday afternoon we went to lunch with a former co-worker of Sean’s at Dakota's, and then went to a tapas restaurant in the Gaslamp District downtown called Ostera.  After dinner we poked our heads into a small live music venue called The Stage, as the bouncer outside let us know that there were free reggae band performances all night.  The first band was ok, but sounded a little bit more like blues and funk than reggae.  We stayed for one drink then headed back to the hotel.

Yesterday we went to one of my favorite breakfast spots from back in the day,The Green Flash in Pacific Beach.  They have the best Bloody Marys around in my opinion, although I had fonder memories of the Huevos Rancheros.  Sean was excited that they served refried beans and tortillas with his breakfast instead of toast.  I think he may be part Mexican too. :D  We spent the rest of the day looking at different apartment complexes in San Diego so that if we do end up getting jobs down here we will at least have an idea of where we can live.

We ended up back in La Jolla for dinner, and ate at another of my favorite places,La Dolce Vita.  It is hidden away off the main drag, in a little courtyard area between some boutique shops.  I give it a 10 out of 10 for ambiance and amazing food, but Sean decided on 9 out of 10, because as a designer he feels there is always room to improve!

After dinner we ducked into a couple of tiny art galleries and checked out some rare Dr. Seuss sculptures and Michael Godard paintings.  Sean actually owns one of Godard's prints, the cover art for Sean's favorite band Dishwalla for their "Opaline" album.  Then we walked down to La Jolla Cove, which to me is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and watched the sun go down before it disappeared behind the clouds.

Today we are going to be meeting up with our friends Justin and Mirabelle, and their two-year-old daughter Marissa.  I think tomorrow we are going to try to hit some of the tourist attractions like the Maritime Museum, the USS Midwayaircraft carrier, and Coronado Island.  One of these days we will actually make it to the historic Giant Dipperroller coaster in Mission Beach.
